Retreat Life: Luxury Bathroom Design Ensures a Spa Day Every Day
Design darling, do you need a spa day? That’s probably a silly question, because who doesn’t need that luxe escape right now in the hustle and bustle of the season.
But what if you could have that glorious, restorative break from the real world right at home. You absolutely can. Spa-inspired primary bathroom retreats are taking top billing in interior home design — now more than ever. And for good reason.
Interior home design, when masterfully done, is the driver that creates mood, temperature and “experience” in a space — even when the architecture itself is unremarkable. And designing spaces that nurture at home actually supports greater wholeness and ease.
In essence, we can ‘peace-up’ our lives in creative ways. Here’s how we recently did just that to create a stunningly serene luxury spa retreat for a homeowner.
From Dark to Light
Formerly a dark and cavernous space, our first order of business in this primary bathroom interior design was to introduce an open, light, and bright aesthetic to illuminate this luxury bathroom retreat.
We accomplished this in myriad ways — by capitalizing on natural light and introducing many other sources of light. In fact, one of my favorite parts of this bathroom is the dual-sided “his-and-hers” vanity which we designed to stand illuminated as a center peninsula of the space. It lends all the function needed while doing so in beautiful form.
The plinth base of the vanity is underlit, so it almost looks like it’s floating. Above, the custom, dual-side lit mirrors suspend in space through hand-forged metal frames.
The whole peninsula area affords a sense of light and flow in the space — elevating the tranquil, retreat mood.
Serene Juxtaposition
A spa-inspired bathroom interior design can manifest in many ways — even in the juxtaposition of different aesthetics when expertly paired.
In this particular bathroom, we were very intentional to simultaneously incorporate her preference for light, airy, and bright and his affinity for a more sexy, dark, and mysterious aesthetic.
Elements like soft-white walls, light porcelain stone floors, and white vanity bases delight her. Dark soapstone countertops; beefy, dark cabinet pulls; and a cozy, cave-like shower with heavily textured, organic stone tile — a peaceful nook — speak to him.
There is no rule that says a calming spa retreat cannot have the dynamism of movement and pattern. To take this bathroom interior design to the next level, we brought in a playful yet still sophisticated mood through tile.
Porcelain and marble geometric stone squares pitter-patter across the floor, framed by a clean, soft marble tile in long planks around the perimeter. It’s a tile rug for the space — and it functions much in the same way as its woven counterpart to bring texture and warmth.

Even a square box of a bathroom can become something spectacular, something memorable, something personal — and something akin to an incredible spa-like retreat — with strategic luxury interior design.
