Keep in mind, these aren’t your early 2000s renditions of “accent walls” either, where one wall is half-heartedly painted a contrasting bold or dark or bright color from the rest.

Look closely, and you’ll see the tactile intricacy of the hair-on-hide, hand-pieced and hand-stitched wallcovering in tonal shades ranging from cerulean to navy to dark lavender.

The herringbone pattern is so eye-catching and adds incredible movement to the wall, which also serves as this tremendous foil to one of the homeowner’s favored pieces of artwork.

To amplify the effect even more, we took the window trim to black to meld beautifully within the wall and then added more texture via the smooth velvet club chairs, wrapped in metallic silver. An unexpected addition? The slubby grass cloth on the credenza behind the deck. It unbuttons the space just a bit with a more organic textural complement.

This mural is a stunner, but one thing I want to caution you with is this: When you use a mural paper this striking, you must be intentional about what you place near it. That’s because a design like this one does all the heavy lifting as the art in the room. 

Here, we kept the additional artwork in the space to a minimum, with the sculptural, tone-on-tone plaster in the alcove behind the desk.

In one home we recently overhauled, the clients wanted to make the most impact in a bedroom while keeping some of the existing furnishings. Would the heavy, wood-frame bed have been our first choice? No, but once we found the paint-splash mural for the main wall behind the bed, we knew we could reimagine the space with hip and handsome appeal.
