Vacation Home Dos and Don’ts: Creating a Luxurious Yet Practical Retreat

My dear, a vacation home is all about kicking back, sipping something fabulous, and basking in the glow of your impeccable surroundings.

But let’s be real — without some smart interior room design choices, that dream retreat can easily turn into a very un-relaxing space faster than you can say “waterfront property” or “mountain escape.” No one wants high maintenance while they’re clocking out for a getaway.

So, let’s break it down with some dos and don’ts to keep your vacay sanctuary stylish, durable, and totally stress-free.

DO: Pick Fabrics That Can Handle Life (and Spills)

Look, vacation homes are for living — so forget the precious, fussy fabrics that you have to tiptoe around. Instead, opt for approachable materials that scream “luxurious but low maintenance,” like Crypton and indoor-outdoor textiles. They wear like a tank but feel like a dream. No one wants to spend their getaway scrubbing wine stains out of delicate linen, darling

DON’T: Cheap Out on Furniture

I am just going to say it right here: Sometimes our guests and our family members may not always treat items as carefully as they would in their own homes. So durability is key for your interior room design. You’ll want furniture pieces that can take the hit. The cheap, flimsy stuff won’t cut it — unless you enjoy replacing it every season.

Invest in high-quality, resilient pieces that can handle rowdy game nights, slumber parties with kids jumping on the beds, and more without falling apart.

DO: Add Greenery (the Right Way)

Real plants are fabulous for making spaces feel fresh and welcoming — that is, if you’re there to keep them alive. So, if you’re spending an entire season at your home, consider picking up fresh plants from Lowe’s or Home Depot.

But if your visits are more “pop in, pop out,” those plants may not get the TLC they need and deserve.

So, here’s the only time and place I’ll suggest opting for high-quality faux greenery in interior home design. The faux options have improved tremendously in recent years, so look for a tasteful, artificial fiddle-leaf fig or ficus doppelganger— rather than watching the real ones meet their demise. Succulents and small mossy balls can be great faux alternatives, too.

DON’T: Go Overboard on Faux Flowers

Speaking of faux, flowers is where I generally draw the line. I like my flowers like I like my diamonds: REAL. If you must use faux flowers, invest in the best quality available.

However, in general, fresh flowers are always the superior choice. If you want a touch of floral beauty without the maintenance, consider picking up simple, natural arrangements that can easily be refreshed during your visits.

DO: Be Smart About Rugs

Rugs are the finishing touch to your vacation home’s outfit — but pick wisely. Wool rugs? Yes, please. They’re naturally stain-resistant and durable, making them perfect for sandy toes and spilled cocktails. Delicate, high-maintenance fibers? Not unless you enjoy stress-cleaning instead of sunbathing.

DON’T: Neglect Your Entertaining Game

Whether you’re hosting and entertaining guests — or they’re taking up residence in your vacation home separately from you — they should feel like they’ve checked into a five-star retreat. I love to stock up on plush bathrobes, comfy slippers, and chic little touches for each guest room to elevate the experience. Also, please don’t forget this headline: Outdoor Glassware and Dishware. Melamine, to be exact — because glass and patios don’t mix.

If you really want to go full-on luxury, hire an organizing pro to put together a guide for your linens, bedding, outdoor cushions, and more. Having a system in place ensures that everything stays in order and ready for use. Because nothing ruins a vibe like hunting for pillowcases.
